In the past, Jan Helin has held positions as reporter, debate editor and managing editor at Aftonbladet. He started at Aftonbladet as an intern 1992/1993, but his real journalistic career started at Sundsvalls Tidning as a music critic and crime reporter. He received his journalism training at Mittuniversitetet, and has also studied at School of Journalism in Stockholm. Between 2003 and 2004/2005, Jan was chief editor and editorial writer at Ålandstidningen.
